Africa-Press – Angola. The director of Culture in Cambambe (Cuanza-Norte), João António dos Santos, defended the creation of a fund to allow municipal administrations to intervene in the maintenance of local cultural heritage.

This fund would allow direct and specific intervention by municipal administrations in the preservation of historical-cultural buildings, including their originality.

The official spoke on Monday, in the city of Dondo, regarding the 8th of January – National Culture Day, said that the lack of funds conditions the intervention of local administrations, contributing to the progressive degradation of this heritage.

He pointed out the current state of the city center of Dondo, classified as a National Historic Site, which brings together several centuries-old buildings, all in an advanced stage of degradation.

An identical scenario can be seen in the historic commune of Massangano, where buildings classified as National Historical-Cultural Heritage are in a complete state of abandonment, without any intervention.

He added that due to lack of assistance, many brands and cultural traits in the region are at risk of disappearing, which could impoverish local culture.

In addition to the city of Dondo and the commune of Massangano, he continued, the municipality of Cambambe has other historical-cultural sites, which are abandoned and need to be revisited, to enrich the national culture.

Data from the Provincial Office of Culture, Hotels and Tourism indicate that there are more than 200 monuments and historical and cultural sites in the province, including classified and unclassified.
