Africa-Press – Angola. The governor of Benguela, Luís Nunes, said Tuesday in this city that he will support the project to promote cycling in the province, through the acquisition of bicycles and other means.
The minister was speaking during a courtesy meeting with athletes from the Jair Transportes team, from Benguela province, absolute national road champions in the elite, under-23 and junior categories.
Luís Nunes said that, despite the high cost of bicycles and other components, he will do everything to help spread this sport.
The governor defended the need for teams based in Benguela province to continue to work on attracting sponsors for cycling, in order to allow for an increase in practitioners.
The prices of bicycles for mass production vary between two and three million kwanzas, tires around 60 thousand Kz and chains 40 thousand, respectively, but the governor promised to sound out a company in the market that can supply these means in favor of cycling.
Luís Nunes informed that, in the coming days, there will be a meeting with the management of the Provincial Cycling Association and the respective representatives of the teams, in order to identify the main constraints that afflict the class and try to overcome them.
“One of the Government’s priorities is to continue to support all sports in the province”, he said.
Meanwhile, the president of the Jair Transportes team, Jair Carapinha, praised the meeting, as he considers there to be a long-awaited green light to leverage cycling as the flag of the province.
According to Jair Carapinha, cycling teams are struggling with the lack of bicycles and replacement material due to the high costs charged in the market, and this meeting comes as a relief to practitioners of the sport, especially in the training levels.
The JT-300 team went to the headquarters of the Provincial Government of Benguela to deliver three national champions’ jerseys to Governor Luís Nunes.
These are absolute national road champions, Igor Silva, in the elite category, Edivaldo Ferrão, champion in the sub-23 category, and Diego Albano in the junior category, respectively.
The national cycling championship took place in the province of Cuanza Sul, last July, in which the province of Benguela was represented with five teams.
