Dom Cardeal Hospital Launches Pediatric Cardiac Surgery

Africa-Press – Angola. The Dom Cardeal Alexandre do Nascimento Hospital Complex has been conducting a pediatric cardiac surgery campaign since the 1st of this month, under the motto “Treating Hearts, Transforming Lives”.

The campaign, which runs until the 20th, is an initiative of the Ngana Zenza Foundation for Community Development, chaired by the First Lady of the Republic, Ana Dias Lourenc̀§o, and aims to expand the national response capacity in the treatment of congenital heart disease in children.

According to a press release sent Thursday, this cycle of interventions is being carried out in partnership with the Global Cardiac Alliance, whose mission in the country is led by the renowned pediatric cardiac surgeon William Novick, one of the world’s leading experts in this specialty.

The team also includes two surgeons trained by the specialist himself, two perfusionists, an anesthesiologist, an instrument nurse, three pediatric cardiac intensivists, and six nurses specializing in pediatric cardiac intensive care.

Throughout the mission, the international professionals work directly with the national teams at the Hospital Complex, promoting skills transfer in a real work context (in-job training) and strengthening the national capacity to respond to highly differentiated cases in this critical area of children’s health.

To date, six procedures have already been performed, including two highly complex cases involving a 25-day-old baby with transposition of the great vessels and a two-kilogram newborn with partial agenesis of the sternum, a rare and high-risk condition.

By the end of the campaign, at least 24 pediatric cardiac surgeries are planned. The patients are children from various provinces of the country, but most reside in Luanda.
