Africa-Press – Angola. The exhibition “Reflecting #2 – Fragments, Fragility, Memories” on display at the Museum of African Art in Belgrade, since 13 April, closed on Wednesday.

The exhibition is built through the careful selection of works by Angolan artists, representative of what is, in a broad spectrum, the artistic production and intellectual reflection of an iconic generation born after the Independence of Angola, in 1975.

A seminal publication of the same name was born from this project, with texts by Ana Knežević, Emilia Epštajn and Graça Rodrigues, which comprehensively reflect on the multifaceted production of the artistic generation involved.

The catalog will soon be available at the galleries in Luanda and Lisbon, and will be presented in London in October, in the context of the gallery’s participation in the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair.

The exhibition “Reflect #2”, held at the Museum of African Art (Belgrade) in collaboration with THIS IS NOT A WHITE CUBE Art Gallery, is the second of its kind, dedicated to presenting works by artists of African origin. edition, which focused on reflections by contemporary Namibian artists (2020), Reflect #2 now explores the fragments, weaknesses and memories of contemporary Angolan artists.

Curated by Ana Knežević, Emilia Epštajn, Graça Rodrigues and Sónia Ribeiro, the exhibition brings together a comprehensive overview of this multifaceted production, including works on paper, installations, performance, painting, photography, textiles and video, by Alida Rodrigues, Ana Silva, Cristiano Mangovo, Francisco Vidal, Januário Jano, Luís Damião, Nelo Teixeira, Osvaldo Ferreira, Pedro Pires, Eri Claver.

The works on display reveal a strong affinity with the stratified aesthetics and materiality of the “archive”, whose non-existence – due to abandonment or endemic exhaustion – has proved to be critical in Angola.

The project was purposefully designed for the temporary exhibition wing of the Museum of African Art in Belgrade, establishing a dialogue with its permanent collection, which includes objects, artefacts and works of art that reflect the material culture of West Africa, including Angola.
