Africa-Press – Angola. The municipality of Londuimbali, province of Huambo, has had, since 2021, the first and only poultry farm, a private initiative project, which has gained satisfactory levels of egg production and market space.
Located in the commune of Alto-Hama, 64 kilometers from the city of Huambo, it is part of the Agricultural project, Chacra AFJA, and is recommended by the veterinarian, Álvaro da Silva Chipepe, graduated from the José Eduardo dos Santos University, who decided to put his academic knowledge into practice.
The poultry farmer, who has 750 laying hens, produces, on a daily average, 400 eggs/day, sold in the informal and formal market in the communes of Alto-Hama, Chipipa and the city of Huambo, with a fully defined target audience, between traders and consumers in general.
Despite being in an embryonic phase, the project, implemented with its own resources, has the potential to become one of the main references in that municipality and the province as a whole.
Álvaro da Silva Chipepe says he started, at first, with 300 chickens and later evolved to 500 and then 750.
He mentioned that, in addition to his passion for animal care, taking into account the area of academic training, he embraced the project to face the difficulties of employability in the sector.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, Álvaro da Silva Chipepe said he acquired professional experience by working, for a long time, with a businessman in the sector.
Regarding the evolution of the project, he assured that it has registered satisfactory growth, despite the constraints in the acquisition of feed, the lack of energy from the public network and the high cost of fuel, which have seriously affected production levels.
Because of this, the poultry farm has a production level of over 400 eggs/day, equivalent to only 60 percent of the estimated capacity of approximately 700.
However, he pointed to investing in solar energy as a solution to counter the current situation and increase production capacity, in order to respond to the needs of the market in the municipality of Londuimbali, as well as the province, providing products at low cost.
Still, in terms of prospects, he said he intends to reach five thousand chickens, to produce around 4,500 eggs/day.
Pig production and fish farming
In addition to the poultry farm, the owner has taken satisfactory steps in pig production and fish farming, with a view to making the agricultural and livestock project more integrated.
At this point, he said, there are 25 sows available, the target of which is to reach 100, to produce, on average, 180 piglets for each birth, to be sold, in the future, with a minimum weight of 50 kilos.
Currently, it has a total of 72 cattle, from the suckling phase to pre-fattening.
With the production of cattle, the prospect of producing proteins from animal products in the future.
Regarding fish farming production, he said that more than 100 tilapia fish are available, which have been produced regularly.
Job creation
In two years of existence, the project created six direct jobs and 35 indirect jobs, mainly for local young people.
Angelino Manuel Caterça, one of the employees, was satisfied, given the fact that it was his first job and the income from which he has served to support his family and cover the expenses of secondary-level academic training.
Moisés Jamba Caiuca, another employee, who before that was looking for a living through street vending, said that with the money he receives he was able to buy a means of transport.
In addition to having a degree in veterinary medicine, Álvaro da Silva Chipepe is a specialist in Biotechnology and Assisted Production in cows, as well as Andrology for males.
He has worked on several agricultural projects, such as cattle-milk farming, elaboration, implementation and production of eggs, pigs and fish farming.
He is currently a professor at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at José Eduardo Santos University, where he teaches the subject of Community Medicine and Genetics.
