Africa-Press – Angola. Thirteen tons of catfish were caught at the end of December 2025, by fishing vessels, in the Luando river, municipality of Luquembo, in Angolan Malanje province, as part of the annual routine fishing activity.

The information, by the municipal director for the Promotion of Economic and Integrated Development, Eduardo Tadeu Abraão, highlighting that the activity involved 32 artisanal shipowners, corresponding to six families and the fish is intended for local consumption and sale of the surplus, after processing.

He stressed that this type of fishing takes place once a year, in December, marking the end of the fishing season in the municipality.

He said that compared to 2024, the catch level in 2025 has increased significantly.

He said that no other types of fish were caught during the process, because the trap thrown into the river is only suitable for catching catfish.

According to the source, the municipality of Luquembo has potential in artisanal fishing, with malele, catfish and tilapia being the predominant species in the Jombo and Luando rivers, as well as in the Sibondo, Catete and Chanas de Liazili, Mungondua lagoons, among others.

On the other hand, the director said that the fishing sector in Luquembo has recorded considerable growth, as it has allowed the supply of fish on a sufficient scale for consumption and commercialization, impacting the standard of living of families.

He considered fishing as the second factor of production and sustenance and income for families, after agriculture.
