Africa-Press – Angola. The Cabinda State Liberation Front (FLEC) claimed the death of “nine Angolan soldiers and two civilians” during “intense fighting” this morning between the Cabinda Armed Forces (FAC) and the Angolan Armed Forces (FAA).
In a “war statement”, FLEC-FLAC states that the clashes took place around 5:00 am on the border of Kinsembo-Maduda, a village between Cabinda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRCongo).
The so-called Military Command of the Armed Forces of Cabinda also regrets the death of one of its soldiers during the operation and calls on the population to “civil disobedience throughout the territory” of that province in the north of Angola.
The independence organization, in this document signed by Lieutenant General André Binda Nzau, head of the Maiombe Sul brigade, also argues that it is up to the people of Cabinda to “revolt against the Angolan occupation of their land and impose their will as a sovereign people”, guaranteeing “armed protection of the people” and “a vigorous response to any action by the FAA against the people”.
“Innocent civilians are continually and unjustly arrested by the Angolans, under the pretext of supporting the FAC. Two civilian homes in the village of Kisungu were looted and burned by the FAA. The FLEC-FAC will not allow these crimes to go unpunished,” the statement reads.
The same note advocates the “revolt” of the people of Cabinda “until their right to self-determination and independence is recognized”. For several years, FLEC/FAC has been demanding the independence of the territory of Cabinda, the province from which a large part of Angola’s oil comes, recalling the Treaty of Simulambuco of 1885, which designated that part of the territory as a Portuguese protectorate.
The commander of the Cabinda Military Region, Lieutenant General Tukequebi Tussem dos Santos, said last week that the province “enjoys good stability” from a political, social and military point of view, ensuring that there is free movement of people and goods throughout the entire territory.
The high-ranking officer of the FAA, quoted by the newspaper O País, was speaking at the opening ceremony of the year of combative, educational and patriotic operational training and preparation 2025/2026 of the Cabinda Military Region, which takes place under the motto: “FAA – Rejuvenating to strengthen, consolidating peace and territorial unity”.
Angolan President João Lourenço, in a recent interview with Jeune Afrique magazine, stated that the security situation in the oil province of Cabinda is stable and that FLEC-FAC does not pose any threat to Angolan territory.
