Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the FNLA, Nimi a Simbi, evoked (Friday), in Luanda, the desire of the militant mass of this party to see the figure of Álvaro Holden Roberto elevated to the status of National Hero and the 15th of March to the category of National Holiday.
Speaking at the ceremony commemorating March 15, 1961, a date that marks an uprising by Angolan nationalists in the north of the country, the political leader said that this act was not done in a disorganized and thoughtless way, but resulted from a prior political awareness of the populations.
According to him, it was also the action that began on March 15, 1961, that awakened the conscience of Portuguese patriots who, on April 25, 1974, deposed the then president of Portugal, Marcelo Caetano.
Nimi a Simbi added that the 25th of April stands as the dividing line in the formation of contemporary Portugal, as it marks the end of the Portuguese colonial presence in Africa and stabilized democracy in this European country.
“It was effectively the 15th of March that produced the independence fuse that spread to Cape Verde, Guinea Bissau, Mozambique and São Tomé and Príncipe”, he stressed.
For the president of the FNLA, the option for the armed route on March 15th was the last resort found by Angolan patriots in the face of the stance of the colonial regime that refused to give up Angola’s independence.
The ceremony brought together members of the FNLA Political Bureau and Central Committee, as well as activists and supporters.
