Africa-Press – Angola. Former soldiers from the South West African People’s Organization (SWAPO), carry out, from the 8th to the 12th of this month, a tourist excursion to the province of Cunene, with the purpose of visiting the former combat zones and other historical sites.

The caravan is made up of more than 60 members from various regions of the Republic of Namibia, namely Windhoek, Oshakati, Rundu, Cunene region, Caprivi, Oshana and Owanguena.

In a statement this Wednesday, the head of the delegation, Brigadier Commissioner for Reform Shiti Shombe, said that the delegation intends to see the areas where SWAPO troops fought alongside FAPLAS, against the apartheid regime imposed by South Africa. South.

“We arrived here not for political reasons, but to do war tourism to learn about our former positions, the inhabitants of these regions, visit the cemeteries where compatriots are buried and find out more about the development of Angola”, he emphasized.

He added that the tourist excursion aims above all to show respect for the Angolan people, who throughout this difficult period of armed conflict supported the brotherly people of Namibia.

These were, he said, very serious battles in which many people died, both military and civilians, which is why, today, we have the duty to pay our deepest tribute, to honor with dignity all the citizens who participated in these battles.

“After the war is over, there is an urgent need to strengthen our bonds of friendship, brotherhood and gratitude for the support provided by Angolans who were subjected to sad moments so that Namibia could achieve independence”, he said

Shiti Shombe said it was crucial to pass on information to the new youth, Angola’s unconditional support, which made Namibia’s self-determination and independence possible in 1990.

He made it known that during the tour to Cunene the delegation will visit the memorial of King Mandume, the large Ombala from the reign of Owkwanhama, the cemeteries of Mupa, Evale and the town of Oshietekela.

The province of Cunene shares a 460-kilometer border with the northern region of Namibia.

The Republics of Angola and Namibia cooperate in the sectors of Defense and Security, Transport, Energy and Water, Health, Petroleum, Tourism, Fisheries, Agriculture, Finance, Geology and Mining, among others, either bilaterally or within the framework of the Community Southern African Development Council (SADC).
