Africa-Press – Angola. The provincial governor of Benguela, Luís Manuel Nunes, admitted this Monday that there is still much to be done to improve working conditions, but reiterated the Executive’s commitment to fight for the appreciation and dignity of workers.
In an act alluding to International Workers’ Day, which is celebrated yesterday, in front of hundreds of workers and union and civil society representatives, Luís Manuel Nunes was peremptory in stating that it is necessary to continue to fight against exploitation, job insecurity and inequality wage.
For the governor, all workers must be treated with dignity and justice, regardless of their position or professional category, and, for this, the role of employers in promoting a fair and safe work environment is fundamental.
As an “important engine” of the economy and for its role in creating jobs and generating wealth, Luís Manuel Nunes defended that companies ensure labor equality, thus practicing remuneration criteria based on the merit of the workforce, respecting the rights of workers.
Specifically, the highest official in the Government of Benguela listed the challenges that still exist, such as providing effective social and economic conditions, in a continuous fight against precariousness and insecurity at work.
So much so that he believes that only with a united and solidary working class will it be possible to win this fight in such a way that companies can ensure job stability.
“I am well aware that the working conditions that we all yearn for have not yet been met, I am aware of the countless difficulties we face on a daily basis”, assumed the government official, pointing to the high unemployment rate, but also to the instability of existing jobs.
Luís Manuel Nunes also reinforced the commitment of the Provincial Government of Benguela with the creation of a favorable business environment, for the generation of more jobs and to protect the rights of workers with public and private companies.
Thus, it considers it imperative to invest in the field of continuous professional training for workers, creating incentives for companies to generate more jobs, fighting to ensure that all workers have access to fair wages and decent working conditions.
Mitigating the impact of Covid-19 on workers
In his speech, the governor also highlighted the Government’s work to, in partnership with the private sector, mitigate the harmful impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic and the economic crisis, namely unemployment which, according to him, directly affects workers and raises uncertainties in society and business around the world.
To this end, the governor explains that the Government’s goal is to create more and more jobs, precisely to reduce the impacts of the pandemic and economic crisis on the lives of workers, mainly in the province of Benguela.
However, the official also launched a challenge towards the promotion of a healthy and safe work environment, so that “we can continue to count on the capacities, skills and dexterity of the workers of Benguela in the construction of a better future”.
Likewise, he appealed to the union, creativity and entrepreneurial spirit of all workers, in order to overcome the “many challenges” related to the working day, emphasizing the fundamental role of this class in materializing the dream of progress and well-being.
The provincial act commemorating the International Workers’ Day was marked by the already traditional parade of public companies from the various branches of activity, in addition to the raffle of monetary values in favor of workers affiliated to the unions.
