Africa-Press – Angola. The provincial governor of Uíge, José de Carvalho da Rocha, defended, this Tuesday, greater rigor in road inspection, in order to reduce the number of road accidents in the region.

In 2023, the province of Uíge recorded 136 deaths and 733 injuries, as a result of 648 road accidents, an increase of 46 deaths, 26 injuries and 66 accidents, compared to 2022.

The governor made this statement when he spoke at the opening of the ordinary meeting of the Provincial Road and Traffic Planning Council, having considered the increase in road accident victims to be worrying.

For this reason, the governor urged everyone’s involvement in educating and mobilizing the population, especially young people, about the importance of complying with traffic rules, a measure that would considerably reduce the number of victims of road accidents.

In turn, the provincial director of Transport , Traffic and Urban Mobility of Uíge, João Peliganga, said that new traffic signs will be placed on several roads, to keep drivers and pedestrians informed.

Regarding training on driving rules for motorcycle taxi drivers, he said that more than 600 motorcycle drivers have already been trained. He added that the initiative, which began in the host municipality, will expand to other locations in the region.

The province of Uíge controls 9 thousand 456 motorcycle taxi drivers and 465 taxi drivers.
