Huambo Carnival returns to the dance floor with 44 groups

Africa-Press – Angola. The parade of the provincial stage of Carnival in Huambo returns this year to the dance floor with 44 groups, including children, traditional and adults, after the limitations imposed by Covid-19.

There are 13 carnival groups for adults, 12 for children, an equal number of traditional dance, six animation blocks and a guest, from the province of Zaire, called “Tumueno”.

With a stage on Avenida Alioune Blond Beye, in the Academico neighborhood, in the center of Huambo, the parades will take place next February, specifically on the 18th (children’s) and 20th (traditional and adult), under the motto “With Carnival, let’s massify and strengthen our culture”.

The head of the Cultural Action department in Huambo province, Pascoal Pedro Nhanga, said that registration took place, between December 5, 2022 and 5 of the current month, in the 37 communes and 11 municipal headquarters.

He said that the parade of the 44 groups in the provincial phase will result from competitions from the 14th to the 15th of the current month, which previously only paraded in traditional animation block formats.

After the communal phase, he explained, municipal parades are scheduled to take place between the 11th and 12th of February, from which the representatives for the provincial phase will leave.

Pascoal Pedro Nhanga said that the parade order for the provincial phase will result from a draw, to be carried out as soon as the representatives of the 11 municipalities are selected.

The person in charge said that training is scheduled for Thursday (12) for the 55 members of the jury, representing the 11 municipalities, who will have the mission to evaluate the dance, the commander, the posture of the revelers on the track, the song and other attractions.

Without specifying the prizes, he said that a training seminar for the choreographers of the groups registered for the communal and municipal phases was also planned for Saturday (14).

The last competitive edition held in 2020 was won by the groups Ovinjenje (adult class), Nzinga Mbandi (in children) and Kativala do Bailundo, in the traditional dance aspect.

With 11 titles won, in 34 participations, the Fogo Negro group, founded in the early 1980s, when the groups Saidy Mingas and União Seguessa (extinct) were the main references of the local Entrudo, holds hegemony in the gallery of winners of the Carnival of adults in the Central Plateau.
