Huila Reinforces Control of Animal Diseases

Africa-Press – Angola. The Veterinary Services of Huila will intensify, this year, the systematic collection of samples in communities and the control of the circulation of products of animal origin on roads and markets to safeguard public health, the local head of Veterinary Services, José Chicomo, told on Monday.

Chicomo said these measures aim to identify health risks early, define intervention strategies and protect animal and public health, underscoring that rabies is the priority for veterinary authorities as it is a lethal zoonosis, although totally preventable, requiring continuous and coordinated action.

The veterinary explained that the plan includes the assessment of the nosological status of livestock in the province and the identification of the most frequent diseases and guiding control for eradication programs.

He indicated that the actions include strengthening the inspection of points of sale of products of animal origin, with a view to reducing the clandestine sale of uninspected meats and by-products.

Chicomo urged the population to collaborate, discouraging the purchase of products of animal origin in unauthorized locations, as the risks associated with the consumption of uncertified meat are imminent.

In 2025, the manager said, more than 300 head of cattle died in Huila province due to nodular dermatitis, out of a total of 680 cases of contagious diseases recorded.

The cases were reported mainly in the municipalities of Gambos, Chibia, Matala and Cuvango, reinforcing the need to intensify sanitary surveillance in these areas.

He assured that the local veterinary services will continue to work in coordination with municipal administrations and epidemiological surveillance teams to safeguard animal and public health in the province.
