International Airport Reinforces Security and Passenger Control

Africa-Press – Angola. The Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport (AIAAN) installed a Passenger Information Monitoring and Management Center (CMGIP), which was inaugurated Thursday by Rui Carreira, the Secretary of State for Civil Aviation, Maritime, and Port sectors.

The center has a platform called the APIPNR Gateway, which allows airlines to send two types of passenger information before boarding: Advance Passenger Information (API), which includes passport and identity data; and Passenger Name Record (PNR), which includes itinerary and reservation details.

The Secretary of State said the opening of the center is a historic milestone for Angola since it strengthens the security of the country’s air borders and solidifies its position as a modern, competitive international transportation airport.

“Centralizing real-time passenger information enables authorities to promptly and accurately identify travelers to Angola, enhancing the detection of irregularities and suspicious travel patterns and preventing unauthorized boarding,” the official explained.

He stated that the system enables preventive and coordinated action, more effective management of migratory flows, and enhanced preparedness against transnational crimes. It relies on the technical support of the global technology company for the aviation industry (SITA) to operate these systems with confidence and efficiency.

SITA’s general director, Fernando Barros, said that with this step, Angola is aligning itself with international airport security standards in its use of API and PNR data combinations with the CMGIP. This creates an operational model that reduces risks, increases border predictability, and offers passengers a more fluid experience.

Barros said this project positions Angola at the forefront of border digitization in Africa.

“These initiatives reinforce Angola’s ambition to become a global transport hub with the capacity for up to 15 million passengers per year. The country will integrate an efficient network of roads, railways, and ports and will benefit from visa-free entry for citizens of 98 countries,” Barros said.

Dr. António Agostinho Neto International Airport is located in the municipality of Bom Jesus in the province of Icolo e Bengo, about 40 kilometers southeast of Luanda, the capital of Angola. The airport has a capacity of 15 million passengers and 130,000 tons of goods per year.

The new airport is divided into several structures and includes areas for domestic and international flights, three passenger terminals, a cargo terminal, a traffic control area, and support facilities.

The total area of the terminals is 27,000 square meters, of which 18,000 square meters have been built. The airport has two runways: one measuring 4,000 meters to the north and another measuring 3,800 meters to the south.
