Africa-Press – Angola. The lack of an effective literary market capable of giving a positive response to the challenges of acquiring and publishing books is one of the obstacles to boosting and promoting the habit of reading and books in the province of Cunene, southern Angola.
According to the representative of the National Services for Copyright and Related Rights in Cunene, Armindo Ndjungo, currently, the region does not have a functioning bookstore or publishing house, plus the lack of libraries for the reading public to consult a book.
Armindo Ndjungo stresses that the lack of infrastructure devoted to literature inhibits the taste for reading.
Speaking on the subject of World Book and Copyright Day, which is celebrated on April 23, he said that access to books is deficient, as none of the five existing bookstores is in operation.
In terms of libraries, he said that Cunene has only two, one at the municipal level in Cuanhama and the other at the Mediateca, with limited access only to registered users.
Another aspect justified the lack of a publishing house, which forces writers to resort to other provinces to edit and publish their literary works, which raises costs.
He said that the lack of publishers makes many writers shelve their initiatives, aggravated by the scarcity of companies available for financing.
Meanwhile, he said that the office is creating conditions for opening a reading room in the house of culture with the acquisition of over a thousand books, in order to boost and promote reading and book habits in the region.
He encouraged young people to use the media library’s services in order to consult and research some existing works, and he appealed to businessmen to invest in the literary market, such as the opening of bookstores, for example.
Armindo Ndjungo highlighted the importance of the book as a cultural asset for literary development, transmission of culture, training, an asset for the educational teaching process.
World Book Day was established in 1995 by UNESCO, with the aim of recognizing the importance and usefulness of books, as well as encouraging reading habits among the population.
Among other values, books are an important means of transmitting culture and information, containing fundamental elements for the educational process, as well as for the development of literacy and the economy.
