Africa-Press – Angola. With no aspirations to conquer the podium, three federated long distance runners will represent the province of Moxico in the 66th edition of the traditional foot race “São Silvestre”, taking place on the 31st of this month, in the country’s capital (Luanda).
These are the athletes Benjamim Itumbo, José Mussuato and Adelina Tchipe from the Grupo Desportivo e Recreativo “22 de Novembro” who stood out this year in athletics events held in the province.
The chairman of the Sports and Recreation Group “22 de Novembro, Alfeu António Justo “Zé Gordo” said that the delegation will have financial support from the provincial government to cover the costs of participating in the race.
He added that the trip to the country’s capital will be preceded by a “mini São Silvestre” in Luena, in a 10 kilometer route, with a view to preparing the athletes for the competition.
The best participation of athletes from Moxico in this event took place in 2018, when Paralympic athlete David Filipe reached second place with 31 minutes and 56 seconds, while long distance runner Aires Ilunga managed 6th place in the conventional category, in 2016.
Recently, the president of the Angolan Athletics Federation (FAA), Bernardo João, revealed, in Lubango (Huíla), that the prize for this edition will be from first to eighth classified for federated and non-federated and Paralympics.
The winner is expected to receive a prize valued at 1.5 million kwanzas, both for national and foreign athletes (equivalent to 3,000 US dollars).
Data indicate that for the 66th edition of “São Silvestre”, more than 900 national and foreign athletes have already registered, with emphasis on long distance runners from Namibia, South Africa, Eritrea, Kenya, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Botswana .
