Africa-Press – Angola. Two thousand 779 unexploded explosive devices were destroyed (Monday), in Luena, in the province of Moxico, by the Grupo Consultor de Minas (MAG).

The explosive devices, including projectiles and weapons of different types, were identified this month (January) in a warehouse, in the Kapango neighborhood, on the outskirts of Luena, the most populous district of the city.

On the occasion, the local representative of the National Mine Action Agency (ANAM), Chile Chicanha, reported that the magazine was discovered by the local population, who were looking for ferrous materials for commercial purposes, and reported it to the competent authorities.

He assured that more work could be done in the area where the mines were discovered, for the possible removal of devices.

In Moxico, according to ANAM, in 2023 an area of ​​six million, 480 thousand and 779 square meters of land was demined, corresponding to 17 fields.

In these areas, four thousand,659 explosive devices (ows), three thousand,306 obsolete ammunition of various calibers, 497 anti-tank and 36 anti-personnel mines were found, removed and destroyed.

MAG is a non-governmental organization that works in 32 countries around the world to implement demining, stock management and ammunition projects. It has operated in Angola since 1994.

According to ANAM, the province of Moxico, which has 223 thousand 23 squares, is the most affected by mines in the country, behind Cuando-Cubango. It currently has 227 minefields in the region’s nine municipalities.
