MIREMPET suggests studies on calemas

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas, Diamantino de Azevedo, suggested carrying out technical and scientific studies on the calemas that periodically fall in the city of Porto Amboim (Cuanza Sul).

This suggestion was made due to a complaint by the provincial government of Cuanza Sul, presented last Wednesday to the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas (MIREMPET), about the company in the oil sector of Porto Amboim Estaleiro Naval (PAENAL), an asset of Sonangol.

In this complaint, PAENAL is accused of not having complied with the environmental impact studies in the construction of its jetty, negatively contributing to the aggressiveness of the waves.

Diamantino de Azevedo said it was necessary to carry out a scientific technical study of this phenomenon, promising to work with the Ministry of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing to resolve the divergence via Sonangol.

For his part, the vice-governor of Cuanza Sul for infrastructure and technical services, Heitor Alfredo, said that there is a sandbar on Porto Amboim beach, several meters long, warning that if this situation continues “one day we will run out of sand on the coastline”.

For the Chairman of the Board of Directors of SonangolL EP, Sebastião Martins, questions about the built breakwater and the environmental impact, which PAENAL is supposedly creating, have already been negotiated with Sonangol’s two partners, namely DSME in Korea do Sul and SBM.

According to Sonangol’s PCA, the way in which the pier was built requires revision. “At this time, we are going to include the local authorities to help prepare studies that bring solutions to solve the difficulties that the populations face on the seafront”, he reinforced.

He assured that PAENAL is a 100 percent asset of Sonangol which was paralyzed for some time due to lack of projects.

According to a memorandum on “the coastal protection of Porto Amboim”, published last March, there has been a retreat of more than 100 meters from the coastline as a result of the calemas.

According to that memorandum, between November 2019 and October 2022, there was an average of approximately three meters of coastline retreat, which could endanger the infrastructure that still exists.

In recent days, calemas have killed a fisherman, in addition to causing four injuries.
