Africa-Press – Angola. Three thousand 873 students enrolled at the São Luís Gonzaga School Complex, on the outskirts of the city of Huambo, study in 36 classrooms without desks, said this Tuesday the director of the school institution, Sister Júlia Cahali.
The person in charge, who was speaking during a visit by Deputies from the Electoral Circle of the Province of Huambo, said it was a difficult situation, which requires intervention from the authorities, as students have been attending classes sitting on plastic chairs brought from home.
He mentioned that the school, supported by the Government of the province of Huambo, in addition to the lack of desks, also has an insufficiency of classrooms and teachers, for primary education and the 1st cycle, especially in the English Language subjects. , Mathematics and Labor Education.
Currently, he continued, the three thousand 873 students enrolled from the beginning to the first cycle of secondary education, study in 26 permanent and 10 provisional classrooms, which have undergone expansion and improvement works, in an initiative of parents and guardians.
Sister Júlia Cahali informed that the school institution has received support from the Education Office of the province of Huambo, with the sending of the current 91 permanent teachers, while another 20 are on a collaboration basis, in addition to the delivery of school and teaching materials, to improving the teaching/learning process.
Despite this help, he said that more support is needed from different sectors of society, for the acquisition of school desks, completion of the expansion of classrooms under permanent construction and the increase in teachers.
Present at the site, the director of the Education office in the province of Huambo, Mário Rodrigues, without specifying numbers, informed that the São Luís Gonzaga School Complex is part of the local Government’s priorities for receiving school desks, in a phased manner.
He added that some teachers recently admitted in the sector’s last public competition will be able to join the school, especially in the subjects of English Language, Mathematics and Labor Education.
He stressed that, despite poor teaching/learning conditions, the São Luís Gonzaga School Complex has helped the Education office in improving the school network, with the perspective of more comprehensive education in the periphery and surrounding areas.
It is worth remembering that, for this province, the Ministry of Education foresees a total of 109 thousand cards, of which more than 29 thousand have already been delivered in the 11 municipalities.
In turn, the coordinator of the Office of Deputies of the Electoral Circle of the province of Huambo, Armando Capunda, encouraged the school management to continue with activities to expand classrooms, while studying the mechanisms for placing desks.
He said that many students have poor accommodation conditions, which is why, after the visit, he will be able to intervene with government authorities to speed up improvements in student accommodation.
The São Luís Gonzaga School Complex, founded in 1986 by the missionary and Redemptorist priest, Cipriano Jamba, with the aim of responding to school needs in the community, acquired, in 1993, the status of a funded school and, in 2006, received the Decree of creation no 3555/06, being recognized in the Official Gazette in 2017.
During the working day, parliamentarians also visited the production center of Public Television of Angola (TPA) and the provincial broadcasting station of Grupo Rádio Nacional de Angola (RNA).
At TPA they received explanations that, within days, the transmission of regional content could begin, covering the provinces of Huambo, Bié and Cuando Cubango, while at RNA they were informed about the station’s modernization process and the expansion of the signal throughout the province.
