Africa-Press – Angola. The head of the department of culture and historical heritage of the province of Cunene, Ana Maria Lena, highlighted, this Monday, in Ondjiva, the importance of museums in preserving cultural heritage.

Speaking on the occasion of International Museum Day (18 May), the person responsible said that museums guarantee the conservation of symbols, utensils and other cultural values of the region and consequently the transmission of testimony to new generations.

“Museums are spaces that allow new generations to connect with the past, understand the present and build a more conscious and culturally enriched future, as they ensure the conservation of museum pieces, facilitating research into the cultural identity of people”, he highlighted.

On the occasion, the official recalled that the province only has one museum room, located in the Casa da Cultura, highlighting that the provincial office is working on creating conditions to enrich the collection.

Likewise, he said, the training of technicians is in the pipeline to ensure the organization, conservation and maintenance of existing parts, in order to keep the room functional.

International Museum Day has been celebrated on May 18th, since 1977, at the proposal of ICOM – International Council of Museums, a UNESCO organization, with the aim of promoting, among society, a reflection on the role of Museums in its development.
