Africa-Press – Angola. Demining work in the area where the new ring road in the municipality of Saurimo, Lunda Sul province, is being built, was completed this Friday.

The new ring road for the city of Saurimo has the characteristics of a motorway, 39 kilometers long. It will have two lanes each 12 meters wide, roundabouts, shoulders and four bridges over the Candembe, Nhama, Txahungo and Luari rivers.

The project is being built near the Chicapa river, passing through national road 180, Saurimo-Luena, heading to Deolinda Rodrigues Airport, connecting the Saurimo-Muconda road.

The head of Department of the National Demining Institute (INAD) in Lunda Sul, Fidel Dumba, said that work to remove the explosive devices began in 2020.

He explained that during the work, around 264 unexploded explosive devices were removed, with emphasis on anti-tank, anti-personnel mines, RPG7, small caliber ammunition, 60 and 80 MM projectiles and various metals.

The new Saurimo ring road aims to ease road traffic congestion.

Saurimo, with more than 530 thousand inhabitants, is made up of the municipalities of Saurimo, Mona-Quimbundo and Sombo.
