Africa-Press – Angola. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) celebrated, Thursday, in Luanda, 63 years of existence, at a time when the cartel of the main crude producers is observing the increase in price in the market, which closed this day at USD 92.58.
OPEC has existed since September 15, 1960 and includes countries such as Algeria, Angola, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.
The early celebration took place at the International Conference and Exhibition “Oil and Gas”, which was attended by the secretary general of this organization, Haitham Al-Ghais, in the company of representatives of oil multinationals and some African oil ministers.
For Haitham Al-Ghais to celebrate, today, the 63rd anniversary of the Organization’s founding in Luanda, it marks a historic act, giving an important meaning to Angola as a member country that it joined in 2007.
Therefore, the OPEC secretary general defended the “continuous and permanent” relationship with Angola as playing a catalytic role as an oil producer on the African continent and in the world.
Speaking to journalists, on the sidelines of the Conference, he pointed out that the country has large reserves of oil and gas, opportunities that will help Angola to boost the economy and develop in the oil and gas area.
“Angola has a lot of opportunity to increase production and develop its economy, thus benefiting the Angolan people,” he said.
Overall, he admitted that the world needs to invest more in the energy sector, reduce gas emissions, due to the increase in population to more than two million inhabitants by 2050.
With such growth, he continued, it will be necessary to redouble energy production, calling on OPEC countries to invest more in oil, production, refining and petrochemicals.
The 4th Edition of the International Conference and Exhibition, Angola Oil & Gas 2023 (AOG2023) ended, this Thursday, under the motto “Energy Security, Decarbonization and Sustainable Development”.
