Parliament Approves Report on the Nomination of CNE Members Proposed by the MPLA...

Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan Parliament approved this Thursday, 10, the joint report on the nomination of members of the National Electoral Commission (CNE) proposed by the MPLA, PRS, FNLA and PHA. UNITA did not nominate any representatives, claiming that the new composition of the CNE, which assigns nine commissioners to the MPLA, four to the main opposition party and three to the PRS, FNLA and PHA parties is “illegal”, accusing the MPLA of having perpetrated “a constitutional coup”.

According to Novo Jornal, UNITA did not present its proposal, declaring that it was awaiting the decision of the Constitutional Court where it appealed due to the alleged illegality.

The MPLA proposed the following commissioners for the CNE: Maria Augusta Rodriguês, Manuel Sabonete Camati, Eduardo Magalhães, Cremildo Paca, João Damião, Miguel Tanda Uembo, Maria de Lurdes, Gilberto Saldanha and Felismina Gando.

The PRS reappointed commissioner Adriana Chitula, the FNLA nominated Lucinda Roberto da Costa and the PHA Onilda Patrício Kingongo.

It should be noted that, in October last year, the Angolan Parliament approved the composition of the CNE in general terms, without votes from UNITA deputies, who left the plenary session and organized a demonstration, shouting “Angola belongs to the people and not to the MPLA” and “the institutions belong to the people and not to the MPLA”.

The CNE, an independent body that organizes, executes, coordinates and conducts electoral processes, is composed of 17 members, 16 of whom are appointed by the National Assembly, by an absolute majority of deputies in active service.

The member who presides over the body, in light of the Law, must be a judicial magistrate chosen in a curricular competition and appointed by the Superior Council of the Judiciary of Angola.

The term of office of the members of the CNE and its bodies is five years, renewable for the same period, which coincides with the duration of a parliamentary legislature.
