PGR wants immediate release of prisoners with expired sentences

Africa-Press – Angola. The Deputy Attorney General of the Republic of Lunda Norte, Mário Salvador Gama, promised Monday that the institution will work with the District Courts of Chitato and Cuango to proceed with the immediate release of citizens whose sentences have expired but who are still trapped in Cacanda.

Speaking to the press, at the end of the audience he granted to the head of the Provedoria de Justiça’s Provincial Services in Lunda Norte, Wilson Mucapola, the magistrate said that the Cacanda Prison has a capacity for 480 inmates, but currently houses more than 600.

Press found that currently 15 prisoners have expiated sentences and are waiting for the release warrant.

“We will have to do a rigorous job with the courts in order to proceed with the immediate release of all prisoners with expired sentences, a fact caused due to the lack of communication between the Penitentiary Establishment and the Courts”, he stressed.

On alleged excesses of preventive detention, the sub-prosecutor promised that the body will investigate the situation, evaluating the map received to compare the data held by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, with a view to verifying the veracity of the facts.

According to the Ombudsman’s Office in Lunda Norte, around 65 to 80 prisoners are under preventive detention.

Mário Gama admitted, however, that there are several cases of prisoners, some being processed for preparatory instruction and others in the judicial phase.

Currently, the PGR in Lunda Norte has 12 magistrates to serve the ten municipalities.

In turn, the head of Provedoria de Justiça Provedoria Services in Lunda Norte, Wilson Mucapola, called for speed in the processes to avoid excesses of preventive detention and overcrowding in the Prison.

He promised to continue working with the State bodies that intervene in the Administration of Justice, so that cases of preventive detention and overcrowding are not permanent in Cacanda prison.
