Photographic exhibition marks Agostinho Neto’s 101st birthday

Africa-Press – Angola. An exhibition of new photographs and literary works by Agostinho Neto has been on display, since this Wednesday, in Saurimo (Lunda Sul), as part of the celebrations of his 101st birthday, to be celebrated on the 17th of the current month, throughout country.

The provincial secretary of the Young Brigade of Literature of Angola (BJLA), Hélio Sangula, stated that the exhibition aims to remember “the national hero, immortalize him and serve as a source of inspiration for future generations”.

He stressed that there is an urgent need for historians, researchers in partnership with the Ministry of Education, to introduce Neto’s works, perhaps photographs, into primary education so that everyone can benefit from his knowledge.

He explained that the three-day exhibition will culminate with lectures on the life and works of António Agostinho Neto, in partnership with the Provincial Office of Culture, Youth and Sports.

António Agostinho Neto was born in Icolo e Bengo, on September 17, 1922. and died in Moscow on September 10, 1979.

He was an Angolan doctor, writer and politician. In 1975 he proclaimed National Independence and became the first President of Angola until 1979.
