The Port of Lobito will cease to function, in the next few years, as an operator for handling the loading and unloading of containers, to assume only the role of supervisor and regulator of maritime and port activities, with the implementation of the Senhorio program, announced yesterday, in Luanda, the administrator of the Port of Lobito, Janeth Macana.
In an interview, as part of the port businesswoman’s participation in the 37th edition of the Luanda International Fair (FILDA), which aims to strengthen the brand and positioning of Porto do Lobito in the national and regional market, Janeth Macana said that , the Port of Lobito will operate as the Port of Luanda, in which its terminals are managed by private operators of international reference.
“The Port of Lobito will start to inspect, regulate maritime and port activity, as well as start to carry out a set of actions that are applied to ports, namely the international code for the protection of ships and port facilities, as well as the international code for This process will involve the concession of multipurpose terminals, through the public tender already open to all interested parties, which includes the container terminal and the general cargo terminal, as well as the mining terminal, which is added to the tender for the Lobito,” he said.
According to the administrator for the Commercial and Operational area, in addition to the program for the transition of operational activities to private agents, called “Senhorio”, which will galvanize port operations, the Port of Lobito, with the return of mining transport, we have been experiencing an increase in terms of the volume of cargo transported from the DRC to the Port of Lobito.
“The volume of cargo transported from the DRC to the Port of Lobito is shipped through our port on an export basis, but we also have an import regime for certain raw materials that go to the DRC via the Benguela Railway. year, we continue to see this increase in mining transport”, he said.
In addition to transporting mining products, according to the administrator, the Port of Lobito has also exported other goods, such as sulphur, chemical products that have been transported to the DRC. “The Port of Lobito, under import regimes, has transported diverse food cargo, which include cereals and several other types of bulk, such as liquids, such as fuel and gas. We also have in the export regime, certain products that are shipped from Porto from Lobito, such as minerals that come from the central and southern regions of the country, which are shipped to other countries in Europe, Asia and India”, he pointed out.
He said that, since 2008, the Port of Lobito received, through the government’s requalification project, equipment and infrastructure to contribute to the increase in traffic and the improvement of port operations. Of these investments, he added, the businesswoman from the port of Lobito has been investing in the maintenance of equipment that has been helping to increase the volume of containers handled.
“In recent years, investments have also been made in human capital in order to provide workers with knowledge in order to prepare them for the changes that lie ahead, especially the transition from operator port to lordship. In addition to this investment, Porto do Lobito also invested in technologies for port management and for the invoicing process”, he said.
