Africa-Press – Angola. The Portuguese President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, defended this Tuesday, at the United Nations headquarters, in New York (USA), the need to reform international institutions, especially with regard to the system of the United Nations, for greater rights.
When intervening in the general debate within the framework of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, the Portuguese leader argued that today we live with a Security Council that does not correspond to the current world, therefore defending the country’s position in becoming a permanent member of this body, such as Brazil.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also defended the reform of institutions designed in the last century, completely removed from the reality of the current world, so that it is possible to build peace, linking these two urgencies with respect for the United Nations Charter.
“There is no reform of institutions without respect for the charter of the United Nations”, said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.
The Portuguese President urged respect for the United Nations Charter in order to guarantee peace in the world, also drawing attention to the need to accelerate the fight against climate change.
On the other hand, Marcelo de Sousa announced that Portugal has just signed, with Cape Verde, an agreement to convert the State’s debt into an environmental and climate fund, converting the debtor’s debt into the creditor’s contribution to economic and sustainable development.
He added that this must happen systematically with existing debts and with the financing of sustainable development, highlighting Portugal’s intention to extend the project to other countries in the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries (CPLP).
The 78th Session of the UN General Assembly takes place under the theme “Rebuilding trust and rekindling global solidarity: accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all”.
The general debate of the 78th United Nations General Assembly was preceded by the Sustainable Development Goals Summit (SDG Summit).
