Africa-Press – Angola. The 6th edition of the Potato Fair and the 13th of the Christmas Fair, which took place from the 19th to the 23rd of this month, generated four million 539 thousand 509 kwanzas, raised by various exhibitors, a result considered “negative”, as participation was low , stated the organization.
The previous edition raised 60 million kwanzas and had the participation of 280 exhibitors.
The activity, an initiative of the local government, together with the Commercial and Industrial Agricultural Association of Huíla (AAPCIL), featured 75 exhibitors, out of more than a hundred planned.
The exhibitors included five agricultural and livestock cooperatives, three agricultural associations, two catering units, five industrial establishments, 30 individual producers, 15 commerce and distribution operators, among others.
When summing up the event, Tuesday, the director of the Office for Integrated Economic Development of Huíla, Domingos Kalumana, stated that the most sold products included reindeer potatoes (+3 tons), sweet potatoes (+0.5 ton) and beans (+0.5 ton).
He also reported that products such as ginguba, onions, tomatoes, homemade chorizo, pork, various fruit and ornamental plants were sold, as well as various fruits, including the so-called “Christmas Perinha”, harvested only in December.
He declared that the balance is not at all satisfactory, as due to the rain, certain producers were unable to take products from production areas to flow areas and supply the fair, which meant that there was more supply.
He justified that the lectures scheduled at the event were no longer held due to the poor attendance of exhibitors on the days of lectures, because due to the increase in demand, production was sold out for a short time and the producers returned, some before the end of the fair and they didn’t come back.
Domingos Kalumana stressed that the challenge for producers was that the population needs rural products and for the cabinet and other Government bodies, the need to provide greater support to producers, not only for production, but also for removal of products from the field and improvement of access roads.
The objective of the event is to promote potato production in Huíla and provide a variety of products and services that can be useful for Huíla families during the festive season. In this case, the producer sells his production directly to the consumer.
