Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, discussed, on Tuesday, at the United Nations headquarters in New York, issues of common interest with his Kenyan counterpart, William Rutu.
Strengthening relations between the two States was the main theme of the meeting, held on the sidelines of the General Debate of the 78th Session of the UN General Assembly, which runs until 26 September, with the participation of more than 196 speakers.
At the end of the meeting, there were no statements to the press.
Angola and Kenya signed a general agreement in 2014 that contains legal instruments linked to political consultation and the establishment of a joint committee, particularly in the area of transport.
On the Angolan side, new areas of cooperation have already been identified, such as education, tourism, agriculture and health.
With an estimated population of 51 million inhabitants, Kenya represents the largest economy in East Africa and the fifth largest in Sub-Sharan Africa.
The telecommunications sector represents 62 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), followed by agriculture, with 22 percent.
Also this Tuesday, President João Lourenço met with his Nigerian counterpart, Bola Tinubu, and the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, among other political and business entities.
Previously, the Angolan Head of State participated in the opening session of the General Debate of the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly, an event that brought hundreds of Heads of State and Government or their representatives to New York City.
On Monday, the President of the Republic held a meeting with his counterparts from Estonia, Alar Karis, and from the Comoros and the African Union, Azali Assoumani.
Likewise, he received the former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Institute for Global Change, Tony Blair, as well as the executive directors of the US Internationalization Finance Corporation, Scott Nathan, and Rio Tinto, Jacob Stausholm.
João Lourenço has been in New York since last Saturday leading the Angolan government delegation participating in the work of the United Nations High Level Week.
In this context, he participated, on Monday, in the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, where he made a statement focused on the SADC strategy for achieving the goals of the 2030 Agenda.
In his speech, he spoke of the progress, constraints and challenges of that regional body in achieving this and other global purposes, and defended a coordinated effort to eliminate the constraints that discourage investors.
