Africa-Press – Angola. The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, expressed his satisfaction this Saturday with the progress of the works at the Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital Complex and the rehabilitation and expansion of the Américo Boavida Hospital, in Luanda.

The information was provided by the Minister of Health, Sílvia Lutukuta, at the end of the President’s inspection of the rehabilitation and expansion works at the Américo Boavida Hospital, in Queimados, in the Kilamba Centrality, and the Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital Complex, in the municipality of Samba.

“The President of the Republic was pleased with the progress of the works. We did, in fact, have some obstacles at the beginning at the Américo Boavida Hospital, but the situation has been resolved, the financing issue is well secured and the infrastructure is on the right track”, said the Minister.The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, noted this Saturday the level of progress of the works on the future Pedro Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital Complex, which is being equipped with modern, high-precision technology for the diagnosis and treatment of highly complex diseases in the country. With an installed capacity of 145 beds, the hospital centre will have therapeutic oncology, radiotherapy, radiosurgery, brachytherapy and chemotherapy services. During his stay at the site, the Head of the Executive Branch, accompanied by his assistants, was informed by those responsible for the works about the progress of the works, which are approximately 70 percent completed. Located on Morro Bento (Gamek on the right), in Luanda, the hospital occupies an area of ​​32 thousand square metres and with the main building being spread over three floors, with a total area of ​​29,062 square metres.The hospital unit also has 36 outpatient clinics, 16 examination rooms, 36 haemodialysis chairs, two radiotherapy and radiosurgery treatment rooms, two delivery rooms, an intermediate care unit with capacity for 16 beds, five laboratories, a robotic surgery training centre and two nuclear accelerators.

With a regional dimension, the hospital will have a 100-room hotel and a residential building with 20 two-bedroom apartments.

The hospital complex will also have Nuclear Medicine, a Histocompatibility Laboratory (to check compatibility between organ donors and recipients in cases of transplants), Neurosciences and Orthopaedics.

The services to be provided by the future hospital unit include Cervicofacial Surgery, Interventional Neuroradiology, Hepato-Bilio-Pancreatic Surgery, selected Maternal and Child Care and differentiated specialist training.This hospital complex has been under the responsibility of the Ministry of Health since July 2020. The value of the contract signed in August 2024 with the contractor Wado is estimated at 67 million dollars.

The project aims to materialize the Executive’s principle of expanding the construction and expansion of the public hospital network to ensure better medical and pharmaceutical care for the population.

In December 2019, the Head of the Executive Branch signed the Decree creating and approving the organic status of the General Maria Tonha “Pedalé” Hospital.
