Africa-Press – Angola. The president of the National Assembly, Carolina Cerqueira, held a meeting this Wednesday in Luanda with the European Union (EU) commissioner for international partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, to whom she informed about the issues that have dominated the agenda parliamentary.

At the meeting, Carolina Cerqueira reported that the hemicycle approved, at the beginning of this year, the General State Budget (OGE-2024), which defines financial priorities in the areas of national development, such as education, health, energy and water, sanitation basic and other social impact programs.

In addition, he highlighted education for peace and the strengthening of democracy as priority issues in the current legislature.

Carolina Cerqueira also highlighted the importance of approving the new General Labor Law, considering that it represents progress from the point of view of defending and protecting and expanding the rights of workers, especially women.

Still in relation to the new General Labor Law, he highlighted the fact that it is in line with the Public Service Law.

Regarding the role of Parliament in preserving and promoting peace, Carolina Cerqueira highlighted the involvement of parliamentarians, through national groups, in the pacification processes in the Great Lakes Region and in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

He informed his interlocutor that this process culminated in the approval, in 2023, of the Resolution to send a military contingent for deterrence and monitoring the cantonment of negative troops that destabilize the region and weaken the social and human fabric in the East of the DRC.

He also highlighted the involvement of Angolan legislators in the SADC Parliamentary Forum, an organization whose rotating leadership is currently assumed by the Angolan President, João Lourenço.

On the other hand, Carolina Cerqueira reported the approval, by the hemicycle, of legislative instruments in areas such as regional integration, peace and security, combating trafficking in natural resources and combating the effects of climate change.

In turn, the European Union Commissioner for International Partnerships, Jutta Urpilainen, congratulated Angola for hosting the 1st Session of the Joint Parliamentary Assembly of the organization of African, Caribbean and Pacific states and the European Union (OEACP-EU), within the scope of the new Samoa Agreement.

Euro-deputy Jutta Urpilainen recognized that Angola is a country with great human potential and plays a fundamental role in Africa in maintaining peace and resolving conflicts.
