Africa-Press – Angola. Journalists at public media outlets will have a 27% salary adjustment starting in October of this year, the Secretary of State for Social Communication, Nuno Caldas Albino, announced Thursday in Luanda.
Speaking to the press at the end of a consultation meeting between the Ministry of telecommunications, Information Technology and Social Communication and the Journalists’ Union, the Secretary of State added that in January of next year there will be another 31% increase in career progression, reaching a total of 58%.
He added that in some cases, salary increases for media professionals should reach 75 percent for staff working in the company’s core area of activity (core staff).
According to Caldas, the proposal to update salaries in this sector was initiated by the Boards of Directors of public media companies, emphasizing that the government presented a proposal within their actual financial capabilities. “Companies are very concerned, especially about human capital.
Therefore, programs are underway to improve the working, social, and financial conditions of media professionals, which are at the heart of our concerns,” he emphasized.
Regarding the meeting called for September 2nd of this year by the Angolan Journalists’ Union (SJA) to deliberate on calling a strike, Nuno Caldas stated that it is a right enshrined in law and assured continued open dialogue with representatives of the profession.
