Africa-Press – Angola. The Angolan management at the head of Sociedade Mineira de Catoca obtained, in 2021, the best result of the last five years of the diamond company, with a net profit of 200 million dollars.
According to the chairman of the Board of the General Meeting of Sociedade Mineira de Catoca and also chairman of the Board of Directors of the Empresa Nacional de Diamantes (ENDIAMA), José Manuel Ganga Júnior, this result exceeds the average of 140 million dollars, achieved in the last years under the management of expatriate partners.
Ganga Júnior informed the partners that the team led by Angolan Benedito Paulo Manuel has achieved many successes over the last three years of leadership of the company.
The positive result achieved, he explained, was much more remarkable with last year’s numbers, when everyone expected the worst scenario as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the company reached levels of profitability never before recorded.
According to sources consulted, the current management also stood out for having established a closer relationship with the local government and the communities, with the company having developed particularly important social projects, with an impact on the lives of thousands of families.
Social responsibility programs range from education, health, water supply, fostering entrepreneurship and supporting rural women.
At the recent meeting of partners, the administrator of Endiama, Paureano Receado Paulo, made it known that the public entity maintains full confidence in the current management, stressing that “the team that wins does not move, and congratulated the entire collective of workers of this important company , for the good results presented”.
It has already been seen that Catoca’s management has undertaken a closer approach to the local government and the reinforcement of social programmes.
On the occasion, the Executive Director of IGAPE, Raimundo Santa Rosa, underlined that Catoca’s results exceed all expectations, “a fact that makes us completely comfortable and confident that this management team is doing a great job”, he said.
IGAPE participated in the General Meeting as a representative of the partner LLI, as it is the trustee of LLI’s shares.
Project consolidates position
Despite the fact that different positions were recorded on certain points on the agenda, mainly expressed by the partner Alrosa, represented by Vladimir Marchenko, vice-president of Alrosa, the participants understand that it was clear that the results obtained by the management team, led by an Angolan, are the best in the company’s history, contrary to the controversial performance of Sergey Amelin, former general manager, appointed by Alrosa.
At the end of the 68th General Shareholders’ Meeting of Sociedade Mineira de Catoca, among the main points discussed, it was decided to maintain the current management board, namely, Benedito Paulo Manuel, who is the chairman of the Management Board and also the managing director; Paulo Mandela do Amaral Martins, Deputy for Administration; Sergey Chuvilin, Deputy for Finance and Aleksandr Kozupev, Deputy for the Technical area.
Social responsability
The history of Sociedade Mineira de Catoca is deeply linked to the economic and social development of the eastern region of the country, as it is the largest private employer in the district and a major contributor, but above all because of social programs.

The Archdiocese of the Catholic Church in Namibe was also punctually supported. This support extended to the cultural domain, with Catoca sponsored some of the country’s major cultural events, as well as the publication of a dozen books.
For the first time, for the benefit of the communities surrounding the Catoca mine, the company began a process of requalifying housing in the community, with the Sambaia project, which also provided for the construction of 125 houses. As a way of reinforcing the contribution to improving the living conditions of the populations, drinking water supply and lighting systems, community jangos and agricultural promotion programs were installed, with the creation of cooperatives, to which they provide inputs and equipment to the populations. .
To help reduce hunger and poverty in the region, Sociedade Mineira de Catoca seeks to empower families by generating income. In partnership with the Government and Fundação Brilhante, they implemented strategic social programs (Catoca Aluno, Catoca Mulher Rural, Catoca Jovem Empreendedor and Catoca Académico), for the populations of Lunda-Sul, Lunda-Norte and Moxico.
