State prioritizes infrastructure in the housing domain

Africa-Press – Angola. The Minister of Public Works, Urban Planning and Housing, Carlos Alberto Santos, said this Saturday in Luanda that the State will mainly be responsible for creating infrastructures, defining plots of land and providing roads, electricity and water so that the private sector can build housing.

The official was speaking at the ceremony for the presentation and laying of the first stone of the project “Onzo Yami – A Minha Casa, o Meu Lar”, which foresees the construction of five thousand houses in an area of 300 hectares, creating two thousand and five hundred direct jobs and three thousand and five hundred indirect jobs.

“After the great effort that the State made, by building around 300 thousand houses in centralities, urbanizations and social housing, the time has come to reverse the national housing program”, said the official.

In this regard, according to the minister, everyone is called upon to intervene in the Angolan housing sector, with the aim of reducing the existing deficit, currently estimated at 2.2 million housing units.

Thus, the private sector must contribute by building houses, producing and supplying construction material at a competitive price, while the banks must intervene in housing finance.

According to the minister, the citizen can own the lots and build his house directly or use the private sector to acquire one, in a private relationship.

“In order to reduce the housing deficit, estimated at 2.2 million units, the Angolan government recently approved the directed self-construction program, inserted in the National Housing Programme, where it is expected the availability of around 910 thousand lots of land across the country, until the year 2027”, stressed the minister.

For the minister, the private sector is expected to play an important role as a partner of the State, in the creation of jobs, income and wealth and in the provision of decent housing.

The urbanization “Onzo Yami”, my house in the Kimbundu mother tongue, is being built in Sequele, in Luanda, in an initiative of the Angolan company Ribeirinho LDA, in partnership with the Chinese company Guizhou 7o Construção Angola.

The project was approved by Presidential Decree no 17/15 of January 5th, published in Diário da República.
