Africa-Press – Angola. The United Nations (UN) reinforced, in a resolution made public recently, the need to increase the share of renewable and clean energies by 2030 for a fair and sustainable energy transition.

The resolution was adopted during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which proclaimed January 26 as the International Clean Energy Day, coincidentally the Anniversary Day of the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) in 2009.

According to a press note, Tuesday, IRENA endorses the UN resolution that proclaimed January 26 as the International Day of Clean Energy, calling it “a significant step towards achieving a just and inclusive energy transition”.

By selecting the 26th of January, the 193 Member States of the UNGA recognize IRENA’s leadership role in accelerating the global energy transition based on renewable energy.

With the 28th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) taking place at Expo City Dubai from 30 November to 12 December, this UN decision highlights the need for an approach unified global framework for energy issues.

IRENA’s “World Energy Transitions Outlook” predicts a tripling of annual renewable energy capacity additions from around 300 gigawatts (GW) to 1000 GW on average by 2030 globally.

Welcoming the UN resolution, the director general of IRENA, Francesco La Camera, considers that it is “proof that, since the founding of IRENA, on January 26, 2009, the energy transition has been at the center of attention to combat the climate change and improve human well-being.

The energy transition, he points out, drives an urgent and systemic change, “in order to increase access to energy, reduce inequalities and improve energy security, in prosperous and resilient economies and societies”.

La Camera added that “launching an International Clean Energy Day is a powerful way to remind the world of its commitment to universal access to clean energy and meeting the climate target of the Paris Agreement.”

Angola joined IRENA on 26 January 2009, when the Member States of the United Nations and the Regional Intergovernmental Organizations for Economic Integration decided, at an International Conference on Energy, to set up the International Agency for Renewable Energy (IRENA).
