UNITA Promotes Community Outreach Event

Africa-Press – Angola. On Saturday, the UNITA Parliamentary Group (GPU) promoted a community outreach event in the provinces of Luanda, Bengo and Icolo e Bengo, as part of the celebrations for the party’s Member of Parliament Day. During the event, the members of parliament visited several municipalities in the three provinces of the country, with special mention being made of the visit to the Mabunda market, in the municipality of Samba, and to Praia Amélia.

In statements, UNITA’s secretary-general, Álvaro Chikuamanga, explained that the event’s main objective was to pay tribute to Raúl Danda, “a reference in journalism and freedom of the press”, and to take advantage of the opportunity to discuss issues of great national relevance with the communities, namely the electoral package and the problems of the Press Law.

“UNITA Deputy’s Day is celebrated on May 8, the date that marks the death of Dr. Raúl Danda. This is an opportunity to raise freedom of the press as our main motto and, at the same time, to talk to the people about the ongoing electoral process,” he said.According to UNITA’s secretary general, the people’s reception was marked by enthusiasm and a clear desire for change. “What we found was a people thirsty for knowledge, with a desire for change and aware of the importance of their role in the democratic process. We used accessible language so that everyone could understand the two proposals being debated in Parliament, that of UNITA and that of the MPLA”, he stressed. Álvaro Chikuamanga also highlighted the importance of popular participation in political decisions and criticized the high abstention rate recorded in the 2022 elections. “Abstention is the greatest danger in a democracy. We explained that, even when voting does not seem to have an immediate impact, it is essential to ensure change and accountability”, he stressed.
