Africa-Press – Angola. The National Union of Angolan Workers (UNTA) Trade Union Confederation proposes six months of maternity leave against the current three.
The information was released Wednesday in Luanda by the president of the Group of Women Parliamentarians, Maria do Carmo Nascimento, after a working meeting at the National Assembly with UNTA.
The deputy explained that the review of Resolution 190 was discussed, on the elimination of violence and harassment in the workplace, whose treaty is promoted by the International Labor Organization, to preserve women’s rights. To reach the goal, the participants requested the creation of a joint commission between women parliamentarians, UNTA and technicians from the Ministry of Public Administration, Labor and Social Security to speed up the ratification of the Convention.
For the president of the Medical Association of Angola, Adriano Manuel, who presented the proposal, the objective is to ensure a safe breastfeeding process, as well as healthy coexistence between mother and baby, as this time “necessary for the the child gains immunity.”
He stated that breast milk for six months makes the child healthier and more intelligent, in addition to helping to stop bleeding in women and reducing the probability of having cancer of the uterus. A woman’s performance in the workplace may be affected due to the child’s possible health problems.
