Africa-Press – Angola. Writers John Bela and Esmael Farinha defended this Tuesday, in Luanda, the need to create policies that encourage the love of reading, from childhood.

Speaking about International Children’s Book Day, marked April 2, the writers defended the inclusion of schools and neighborhood committees in these policies that aim to encourage children’s reading in Angola.

For John Bela, children’s books are a vanguard for little ones, as they facilitate learning to read and the development of cognitive ability.

Along these lines, the writer urged those in charge and teachers to have “the book as a priority for children”.

“Attention should be paid to children’s book writers, because they are the protagonists for the development of the society we want”, he informed.

Corroborating this idea, writer and poet Esmael Farinha highlighted that literature in childhood improves vocabulary, making learning more fluid.

To further boost literature in Angola, Esmael Farinha said that policies must be created for children to develop reading habits in schools, colleges and daycare centers.

He recalled that children can have a reading circle with Angolan children’s writers from the new and old wave, with emphasis on Cremilda de Lima, Bel Neto, Ngonguita Diogo, Kardo Bestilo, Mira Clok, John Bela and Manuel Rui Monteiro.

International Children’s Book Day was created by the International Council on Literature for Young People (IBBY) in 1967 and is celebrated annually on April 2nd.

The anniversary was created to honor the Danish writer and poet Hans Christian Andersen, author of some of the most read children’s stories in the world, with a focus on “The Ugly Duckling”, “The Tin Soldier” and “The Little Mermaid”.

IBBY chose April 2nd to celebrate the date as it was the author’s birthday.
