Botswana Launches Health Insurance Reference Group

Africa-Press – Botswana. Botswana has taken a major step toward transforming its health system with the inaugural meeting of the National Health Insurance (NHI) Reference Group. Convened by the Ministry of Health, the session marks a key milestone in the development of Botswana’s NHI model and the country’s broader goal of strengthening health financing.

The Reference Group brings together stakeholders from across the country with a shared vision of ensuring every Motswana has access to affordable and quality healthcare. Participants include representatives from government, civil society, academia, the private sector, and development partners. Their collaboration will guide the design of a National Health Insurance system that is inclusive, evidence-based, and aligned with national priorities.

By combining expertise from multiple sectors, the Reference Group aims to ensure the NHI policy reflects practical realities and meets the needs of the population. The consultative approach allows for input on financing models, coverage strategies, and service delivery mechanisms that support Universal Health Coverage.

The Ministry of Health emphasised that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to build a fair, sustainable, and accessible health system. The Reference Group will continue to play a critical role in shaping policy, ensuring transparency, and promoting stakeholder engagement throughout the development process.

Botswana’s establishment of the NHI Reference Group represents a clear commitment to improving healthcare access, strengthening financing structures, and advancing Universal Health Coverage for all citizens.
