Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Government of Cape Verde clarified that Cape Verdean seafarers can, from now on, work on ships under the flag of ships from the Netherlands and Latvia, with certificates issued by the IMP – as a Cape Verdean maritime authority. In other words, the certificates issued in Cape Verde by this Institute began to be recognized.
In a press release, the Government of Cape Verde, through the guardianship of the sea, clarifies that it has established contacts with the
Maritime Administrations of the Netherlands and Latvia, in order to establish between the parties Memoranda of Understanding (MoU ́s) of Recognition of Certification, in accordance with regulation I/10 of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers – STCW/78, as amended.
In this sense, in January 2023, the Ministry of the Sea, through the Maritime Port Institute, explains that it formalized the agreement, “thus allowing the internationalization of national technical staff”.
With the Netherlands, they elucidate, “an agreement was established for the mutual recognition of training and certification and with Latvia an agreement for the recognition of training given and certification issued in Cape Verde, within the scope of the same STCW/78 convention, as amended”.
Accepted IMP certificates
Therefore, Cape Verdean seafarers can, according to the same source, from now on, work on ships flying the flag of those countries with certificates issued by the IMP – as a Cape Verdean maritime authority.
Remember that similar agreements have already been established between the State of Cape Verde and Belgium, Luxembourg, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus, completing the total of 14 countries with which Cape Verde has established Certification Recognition agreements.
The Executive, through the guardianship of the sea, says that “it will continue to work towards the extension of this agreement with other international maritime entities”.
It should be noted that a piece of news published on the 5th of February reported that Cape Verdean seafarers could already work on ships flying the flag of the two countries in question, which generated controversy on social media, with people questioning whether seafarers Cape Verdeans were always able to work on those ships.
The Government now clarifies that it was referring to the fact that the certificates issued by the IMP, in Cape Verde, are already recognized.
