São Vicente Law Review on Gender-Based Violence Starts

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The revision of the law against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) begins this year and aims to overcome constraints in its application, announced the president of the Cape Verdean Institute for Equality and Gender Equity (ICIEG) on Wednesday in Mindelo.

In a press interview during the conference “Strategic Reflection and Institutional Solutions for Combating Gender-Based Violence,” Marisa Carvalho explained that, although the legislation is considered “robust and progressive,” its practical implementation still faces significant challenges.

Among the main problems identified is the difficulty in interpreting the concepts of gender and gender-based violence, which negatively influences the entire process, from case analysis to evidence gathering and victim protection.

According to the official, these limitations “have contributed to the high number of archived cases, often associated with weaknesses in the evidentiary process.”

The revision of the law, which already has secured funding, is being preceded by a consultation process, with the aforementioned conference being held in various parts of the country, involving magistrates, police officers, the health sector, and civil society organizations, with a view to gathering contributions that will allow the legislation to be adjusted to practical reality.

The president of ICIEG emphasized that the objective is to ensure that the law is not only effective in theory, but also produces concrete results in protecting victims and combating gender-based violence.

In addition to São Vicente and Santiago, which have already hosted the event, ICIEG intends to continue the process of collecting contributions in other parts of the country, assured Marisa Carvalho.
