Africa-Press – Cape verde. The mayor of Porto Novo assured on Thursday, the 15th, that she is negotiating with “potential investors” to build a hospital in the municipality, who have shown “complete interest” in this project.
Elisa Pinheiro was speaking at the Intermunicipal Assembly of Santo Antão and reinforced that Porto Novo, being “the gateway to and from Santo Antão”, deserves a health infrastructure that meets the demands of the population, showing herself to be “committed” to finding partners for the construction of the hospital.
“We have made several inquiries with potential financiers. All we have to do is make the land available and present a draft of the project and an indicative budget”, noted the mayor, stating that the council she heads already has an investor who could finance the project with “a very low interest rate”.
The mayor of Porto Novo said she met this week with another investor who “showed great interest” in financing the construction of a hospital in the municipality, whose health center, which has been operating for more than two decades, “no longer serves users.”
“The idea is to build a hospital to also complement the health structures in Paul and Ribeira Grande”, explained the mayor, who spoke of the possibility of Santo Antão hosting a forum on health to, precisely, address the issue of infrastructure in this sector on the island, but also to look into the problem of patient transfers.
The president of the Association of Municipalities of Santo Antão (AMSA), Armindo Luz, shared the initiative of the mayor of Porto Novo and acknowledged that “there is no doubt” that Porto Novo needs a hospital with other services and specialties.
“AMSA has every interest in this and we will continue to exercise our power of influence in this regard with the Government and other partners,” highlighted Arlindo Luz, admitting that Porto Novo “cries out for other responses” in terms of health.
Porto Novo’s strategic development plan for the period 2024 – 2028, approved in April, highlights the need to build a hospital in this municipality, “since the current health center no longer meets the needs of users”.
The residents have been constantly demanding the construction of a hospital in the municipality of Porto Novo, suggesting that this health infrastructure be prioritized within the scope of this municipality’s infrastructure program.
