Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Armed Forces today began their 59th anniversary celebrations in Sal with a cleanup campaign around Amílcar Cabral Airport, marking the start of a decentralized program culminating on the institution’s anniversary day.
The cleanup operation, which served as the official opening for the Armed Forces Day activities, celebrated on January 15th, mobilized more than 40 personnel from the 2nd Military Region Command to work in the service areas and the northern area of the airport infrastructure.
According to Captain Maria Xavier, the initiative is fundamental to removing waste such as plastics and bottles which, in addition to the environmental impact, compromise the security of the airport’s perimeter fence.
“Within the scope of the activities on January 15th, this is the kick-off, the official opening of our activities. We will have several activities taking place from today until the 15th, not only on the island of Sal, but also in Cape Verde, from civic activities to activities aimed at retirees,” she explained. This year, Sal Island takes center stage by hosting the central event of the institution’s 59th anniversary celebrations, with a schedule extending throughout the archipelago.
The program includes a strong social and cultural aspect, with lectures on the role of the Armed Forces, administrative parades, and health fairs in the city of Terra Boa, in addition to events such as fairs and a cultural evening.
The captain also highlighted the importance of integration with veterans, planning a special gathering at the barracks on January 8th, which will open its doors to the community for demonstrations of military techniques and the sharing of experiences.
The celebration concludes on January 15th with the strengthening of fraternal ties between the military and civil society through inter-institutional games and outreach activities.
