Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the Association for Consumer Protection (Adeco) praised the reduction in electricity prices this Saturday in Mindelo, but called for a greater investment in production from renewable energies for a greater impact on consumers.
Nelson Faria said he welcomes the decision of the Multissectoral Regulatory Agency of the Economy (ARME), which approved a general reduction in tariffs applied to end consumers served by the Cabo Verde Electricity Distribution Company (EDEC) and Águas e Energia da Boa Vista (AEB).
“It is a benefit for consumers who, over the years, have been penalized in a way with the loss of purchasing power and the increase in the cost of living,” he stressed.
For the president of Adeco, ARME did its job with a correct update, considering factors such as the prices of fossil fuels, which is the largest source of energy production in the country.
When asked if there is still a possibility of a greater reduction, Nelson Faria considered that this is possible if there is an increase in electricity production based on renewable sources. “We believe that the increased investment in renewable energy sources that we have available will, in fact, translate into greater sustainability in electricity consumption, both in its production and in its distribution to consumers,” he affirmed.
Therefore, he stressed, Adeco will only be satisfied on the day when energy is predominantly produced from renewable sources and this translates, in fact, into an even greater reduction in prices for consumers.
The ARME reduction applies to electricity supplied by EDEC and AEB, with decreases ranging from 5.84 percent (%) to 7.89% in the case of EDEC and from 0.9% to 1.24% for AEB, depending on the tariff bracket.
Thus, EDEC’s Low Voltage Domestic (LVD) consumers, with consumption equal to or less than 60 kWh per month, will now pay 24.55 escudos per kWh, including VAT.
Those exceeding this consumption level will pay 32.20 cruzeiros. Special Low Voltage (SLV) customers will now pay R$ 27.90, while Medium Voltage (MV) customers will pay R$ 23.09 per kWh.
