Africa-Press – Cape verde. Applications for the 5th edition of the UPCYCLES artistic residency are open until the 19th of this month. UPCYCLES is an initiative to encourage artistic creation, mobility, and exchange.
According to a press release, three Mozambican artists and two from other PALOP countries will be selected to participate in the residency.
The residency will begin online on February 1st, and will have its in-person phase in Maputo from March 30th to April 10th, culminating in the opening of a collective exhibition.
The program is aimed at emerging visual artists and curators from PALOP countries who develop their artistic practice in various fields of multimedia execution and who present a project for the reuse of resources from public and/or private audiovisual archives.
The same source emphasizes that, over two months, participants will engage in remote development, followed by 10 intensive days of finalization and assembly in Maputo.
During the residency, participants will be guided in the conception and creation of multimedia artworks that “recycle” images from the audiovisual archives of these countries, creating narratives that provide new interpretations of History and Memory associated with them.
The work will be overseen by two curators, Ângela Ferreira and João Roxo, and complemented by guests and a technical support team. The program will also focus on the themes of copyright, licensing, and public domain.
The last three days of the program are dedicated exclusively to the installation of the exhibition and its public opening on April 10, 2026, in cultural spaces in Maputo.
Registration must be done through the online form, accessible at the following link: https://bit.ly/candidatura-UPCYCLES-2026.
UPCycles is one of the projects of AAMCM – Association of Friends of the Cinema Museum in Mozambique, funded by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. It is an initiative to promote creativity through the reuse of the audiovisual archives of the PALOP countries, whose concept and format have been successful with partners, artists, and audiences.
