Baptista de Sousa Hospital: President of the Republic advises independent audit of the death of seven newborn babies

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The President of the Republic advised an independent audit to investigate the deaths of seven newborns at Hospital Baptista de Sousa (HBS), in São Vicente, and take appropriate measures. Through a publication on his personal Facebook page, José Maria Neves, said he was following the case with “concern”.

“I know that the Ministry of Health and the hospital itself are carrying out investigations to identify the causes of these deaths and take appropriate measures. And this is essential to put an end to the concerns of the citizens”, considered the head of state.

However, according to the same source, in the case of an “abnormal situation and considering the systematic complaints of HBS users”, it would be advisable to carry out an independent audit for a “comprehensive organizational assessment and presentation of relevant recommendations”.

José Maria Neves ended his publication demonstrating his solidarity with all the bereaved families.

On the 16th, the Ministry of Health announced the carrying out of an inquiry into the death, until then, of five newborn babies, this month, at HBS. So far there are 7 deceased babies.

Death of five other newborn babies last January

It is worth mentioning that in February, the director of the Neonatology Service at HBS), Cátia Costa, also confirmed the death of another five newborn babies in January, clarifying that the causes were prematurity and congenital malformations.
