Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Minister of Health, Jorge Figueiredo, will represent Cape Verde at the 75th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa (RC75), scheduled for August 25-27 in Lusaka, Zambia.
In a statement, the Government stated that the purpose of this meeting is to discuss and approve policies, analyze public health issues, and assess activities and financial plans aimed at improving health in the region.
This meeting will bring together Ministers of Health and heads of delegation from the 47 WHO Member States in the African Region.
The same source indicates that this year’s session will focus primarily on the implementation of global health initiatives and the promotion of Universal Health Coverage in Africa.
Side events are also planned, dedicated to topics such as promoting African leadership and defining a unified position for the continent in favor of implementing the Lusaka Agenda, an Action Plan designed to optimize the impact of global health initiatives.
“One of the most important moments of this mission will be the Minister of Health’s participation, as a panelist, in the high-level side event organized by the WHO Regional Office for Africa, on domestic investment and multisectoral leadership for health in Africa, under the theme ‘From commitment to action: accelerating domestic investment and multisectoral leadership for health in Africa,'” he noted.
On this occasion, Jorge Figueiredo will present the financing principles of Cape Verde’s National Health System, in conjunction with the country’s main health indicators. Cape Verde has been identified as one of the countries that stands out for its health financing and its commitment to Agenda 2063, the Abuja Declaration, and the Declaration of the African Leadership Meeting.
According to the same source, this meeting aims to provide strategic information on health matters, as part of the WHO’s commitment to supporting Ministers of Health in transforming national systems and improving health outcomes across the continent.
In preparation for the Lusaka meeting, working meetings between WHO/Cape Verde, the Minister of Health, and SNS technicians were held on August 21st and 22nd at the Ministry of Health’s facilities. These meetings were aimed at sharing position papers, defining interventions for the sessions, and providing technical preparation for the national delegation.
“Cape Verde’s presence at the 75th Session of the WHO Regional Committee for Africa thus represents a fundamental step in strengthening the country’s position in regional and global health, ensuring that national priorities are properly represented, recognized, and valued, with implications for funding and technical assistance from African health decision-makers,” he emphasizes.
