Africa-Press – Cape verde. The National Institute of Public Health (INSP) launched the first issue of the Cape Verdean Journal of Health Research this Thursday, the 21st, in Praia. This first issue features articles on aging, the impact of COVID-19 on mental health, and the quality of drinking water.
According to INSP President Maria Luz Lima Mendonça, the Cape Verdean Journal of Health Research focuses on health and its determinants, as well as scientific research conducted in Cape Verde and around the world.
“It is the first journal of its kind to be launched in Cape Verde. It is a well-respected journal, already registered in the international databases of Scientific Writing and major scientific journals. The goal is to quickly and more closely share scientific research in the area of health and its determinants conducted in Cape Verde and around the world,” she emphasizes.
Maria Luz Lima Mendonça hopes the journal will also have some impact in other non-Portuguese-speaking countries. “The idea is also to launch the journal in other languages, particularly English, which is the language of science, to increase access.”
Another medium- and long-term goal, according to the INSP president, is to index the Cape Verdean Journal of Health Research in other international journals that also focus on science, “so that what is being done in Cape Verde can truly be seen in other parts of the world, but above all, so that it can help in making evidence-based decisions.”
According to the INSP president, the creation of the Cape Verdean Journal of Health Research (RCIS) aims to complement and strengthen this dynamic, offering a space for the publication of studies and scientific articles in the area of health and its determinants, as well as for collaboration among researchers.
“We believe this is an important milestone for the development of science in Cape Verde because it will allow national researchers, particularly those working on health and its determinants, to disseminate their work in Portuguese and English, and the journal assumes that the articles can be translated into English,” she indicates.
On the other hand, he said that health indicators in Cape Verde are at a good level. “They are well-regarded, but there are still major improvements that need to be made, and this improvement in indicators is based on science and scientific evidence, and the journal is another important step in this process.”
Along the same lines, he emphasized that the National Institute of Public Health plays an important role and mission in scientific and technological research on health and its determinants. It has promoted significant scientific research in Cape Verde, not only within the institute itself but also in partnership with other research institutions.
The president of INSP hopes the journal will be very successful. “We are counting on the collaboration of researchers, and I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the researchers who participated in this first issue. They were renowned researchers who were specially invited and agreed to write articles for this journal.”
Maria Luz Lima Mendonça explains that the journal features articles by researchers from Portugal, Mozambique, Cape Verde, and other countries. “In fact, one of the articles also addresses ethics, which is an important and fundamental issue in scientific research, particularly in the health field,” she reports.
Regarding the periodicity, she said that the journal will be published once a year in this initial phase. “There is a whole process involved in publishing a scientific journal, although we are counting on releasing an extraordinary issue in 2025, considering it is the Year of Cancer.” We’re going to hold an extraordinary launch in November, focusing on cancer-related articles already published by Cape Verdean authors.”
But he emphasized that the intensity of submissions will also impact the journal’s frequency later. “I believe it will most likely be biannual and then four times a year. It’s a step-by-step process; this is the first journal, and therefore, we must proceed very slowly, but also very firmly, because it requires responsibility.”
