Insp Urges Disease Prevention With Rainy Season Arrival

Africa-Press – Cape verde. The president of the National Institute of Public Health (INSP) said this Thursday, the 21st, that with the arrival of rains, there is a risk of disease proliferation, and therefore, she is urging people to reinforce measures.

Maria Luz Lima Mendonça stated that, at the INSP level, together with health services, they have already begun issuing early warnings about preventive measures related to the existence of mosquito breeding grounds.

Similarly, she said that there are currently no cases of dengue or malaria in the country, but noted that Cape Verde frequently receives imported cases from endemic areas, which can favor the internal transmission of diseases.

Therefore, she recommended the use of mosquito nets, light-colored clothing, preferably long-sleeved, and that people take precautions at home and avoid standing water.

Regarding the situation on the island of São Vicente, some concern was expressed regarding solid waste and the contamination of drinking water.

“Therefore, it is very important that sanitation conditions in São Vicente are quickly improved, so that the health sector will not experience many diseases later,” she emphasizes.

She also assures that the health sector has a response plan in place for a possible increase in cases, including the possibility of field hospitals if necessary, with sufficient supplies of medicines and laboratory reagents.

“The health sector is prepared, but we don’t want people to get sick, so prevention is the main weapon; access to clean water is essential,” she assures.

Maria Luz Lima Mendonça recommends that the population of São Vicente boil water before drinking and wash their hands to prevent disease outbreaks.

The president of INPS emphasizes the importance of rapid intervention by municipal and national authorities in improving sanitation conditions on the island of Monte Cara.
