Africa-Press – Cape verde. The Cape Verdean international chess master, Mariano Ortega, became the two-time African champion of zone 4.2, in Dimbokro (Ivory Coast), one day away from the end of the competition.
The competition has been running since last Saturday in Ivory Coast and ends this Friday, the 31st, with the 9th and final round.
The Cape Verde champion of the modality, however, managed to revalidate the title (won last year in Togo) already in the penultimate round, played on Thursday night.
Achievement for the modality in Cape Verde
To Inforpress, the president of the Cabo Verdean Chess Federation expressed his joy for yet another feat for the sport and for Cape Verde.
Francisco Carapinha explained that the two victories recorded on Thursday, the first in the morning against an opponent from Ivory Coast and the second in the afternoon, against a competitor from Liberia, dictated the revalidation of the title to Cape Verde.
As for Célia Rodrigues, the Cape Verdean competitor in this competition, Carapinha stressed that the Cape Verde women’s champion has been doing a great job, but that she has been under some pressure, given the way she was designated top seed, admitting, however, that she can finish “the race in a good fifth position”.
